How to use the Docker Run to Compose

  1. Paste your docker run command into the input box or load a sample command.
  2. The parser automatically extracts the container image, container name, port mappings, volumes, environment variables, and restart policies.
  3. Review the generated, properly indented docker-compose.yml output in the preview panel.
  4. Click “Copy YAML” to copy the configuration or “Download” to save it as a docker-compose.yml file.

Why convert docker run commands to docker-compose.yml?

The docker run command is often the first tool developers use when testing containerized software. However, as applications grow, running containers directly from the terminal becomes unwieldy. Multi-line terminal commands with ten different flags for port forwarding, persistent volume mounts, environment variables, restart policies, and resource limits are hard to remember, difficult to document, and prone to copy-paste errors.

Docker Compose solves this problem by defining your container configuration as declarative Infrastructure as Code (IaC). Storing your container specifications in a docker-compose.yml file allows you to commit your architecture directly into Git, share identical environments across your engineering team, and manage the entire lifecycle of all services with simple commands like docker compose up -d and docker compose down.

Supported docker run flags and YAML mapping

  • --name <name> — Sets the service key and the container_name: property.
  • -p, --publish <host:container> — Maps host ports to container ports under the ports: list.
  • -v, --volume <host:container[:ro]> — Configures bind mounts and named data volumes under volumes:.
  • -e, --env <KEY=VAL> — Configures container environment variables under the environment: block.
  • --env-file <file> — Maps .env file paths under the env_file: property.
  • --restart <policy> — Configures restart behavior (always, unless-stopped, on-failure) under restart:.
  • --network <net> — Connects the container to custom Docker bridge or overlay networks under networks:.
  • -u, --user <uid:gid> — Configures runtime user permissions under user:.
  • -w, --workdir <path> — Sets working directory path under working_dir:.
  • --entrypoint <cmd> — Overrides container entrypoint binary under entrypoint:.
  • --memory and --cpus — Configures container resource limits under deploy.resources.limits.

Compose V1 vs. Compose V2 syntax

Modern Docker installations use Compose V2 (invoked as docker compose without a hyphen). In Compose V2, the top-level version: '3.8' key is obsolete and deprecated by Docker specification standards; the compose file starts directly with the services: block. If your production environment uses legacy Docker Compose V1, you can switch the dropdown above to include the top-level version: '3.8' header.

Private and client-side: Zero credential exposure

Docker commands frequently contain sensitive information, including database root passwords (-e POSTGRES_PASSWORD=...), private API keys, and internal registry domains. This tool executes entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. No commands, environment variables, or private configuration details are ever sent across the network.

Frequently asked questions

Which docker run flags are supported?
The converter supports -p / --publish (port mapping), -v / --volume (bind mounts and named volumes), -e / --env (environment variables), --name (container and service name), --restart (restart policies), --network (custom networks), -d / --detach, -u / --user, -w / --workdir, --entrypoint, and resource limits (--memory, --cpus).
Why should I use Docker Compose instead of docker run?
docker run commands are difficult to version-control, document, and reproduce across team members or production servers. docker-compose.yml files declare your multi-container infrastructure as code (IaC), allowing you to spin up all services, networks, and persistent volumes with a single docker compose up -d command.
Can it convert multi-line commands with backslashes?
Yes. Terminal commands split across multiple lines with backslashes (\) are normalized and parsed automatically.
How does it handle environment variables with quotes or equal signs?
Values containing equal signs (e.g. -e DATABASE_URL="postgres://user:pass@host/db") or quotes are properly split and formatted under the environment: YAML dictionary or list.
Does this tool upload my Docker commands or secrets?
No. The parsing and YAML generation run entirely in your local browser using client-side JavaScript. Your database passwords, environment variables, and private registry paths never leave your device.
